But the public feud that brewed—and eventually boiled over—between Transformers director Michael Bay and actress Megan Fox left Bay with a challenge that could make or break Dark of the Moon, the highly anticipated third installment of the blockbuster franchise: Find a replacement strong and sexy enough to outfox Megan.

Enter Rosie Huntington-Whiteley—a gorgeous model Bay met while filming a Victoria’s Secret commercial in 2009. The guy clearly has good instincts. Before a single frame of her was flashed on the big screen, Rosie had already been crowned Female Star of Tomorrow by CinemaCon, the convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners. No pressure or anything.

Thankfully, while acting is new to Rosie, being the center of attention isn’t. You know Rosie Huntington-Whiteley as a gussied-up, scantily-clad Victoria’s Secret model. But she isn’t afraid to check her glam squad at the door. The Brit, who makes her movie debut in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, didn’t mind being “dirty and hot and sweaty for months on end. It’s not glamorous. You had to become one of the boys, for sure,” she tells USA TODAY.

So she was gladly just one of the guys for the lengthy and physically arduous shoot? Oh yeah, says Huntington-Whiteley.

“You had to leave all sense of girliness at the door. I’m a bit of a tomboy anyway. It’s an all-male cast apart from Frances McDormand, who worked on the movie for a few weeks. It was me and the lads,” she says. (The “lads” include a stable of hunks: Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel, Patrick Dempsey and Tyrese Gibson).

Much ado has been made about the upcoming “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” From casting to the story line to the 3-D, it seems nothing about the filmmaking process on the third installment of the franchise has gone unnoticed. Thankfully, with the film’s June 29 release date quickly approaching, the castmembers have not only been out promoting the movie, but also dispelling some of the anxiety and nitpicking that has surfaced on the Interwebs.

Regarding the casting, specifically the addition of Victoria’s Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley after the departure of former “Transformers” “It” girl Megan Fox, the action flick’s male stars expressed nothing but love and admiration for the first-time actress.

“Rosie is going to surprise a lot of people,” Tyrese Gibson told MTV News recently. “I have to go on record and say that she did not replace Megan Fox. She’s a brand-new character; her name is Carly in the movie,” he explained. “Her name is not Mikaela, it’s Carly,” he reiterated, referring to Fox’s character in the previous installments. “She’s going to surprise a lot of people with her focus and energy that she’s bringing to the franchise.

“She was very focused, very classy, very easy to work with,” he continued. “I was really glad she came aboard.”

In this summer’s “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” Shia LaBeouf is once again battling with giants. By which we don’t necessarily mean robots. We’re talking about Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, a statuesque British model who towers over her leading man. It’s a refreshing tack for Hollywood, where milk crates and tricky camera angles are usually deployed to mask height disparities. “Shia was a man about it,” the 5-foot-9-inch actress tells The Post with a laugh. “He was a short guy and I was a tall girl, and that’s the way it is. I think it’s hot, anyway.”

Director Michael Bay — back for this third installment, which hits theaters June 29 — certainly agreed. He refused to hide the height difference because he thought it might give short men hope that they could one day bag someone as hot as his star.

Aspirational? Yes. Realistic? Probably not. This is a model-turned-actress, after all, recently voted sexiest woman alive by two men’s magazines.

Also, she’s got a boyfriend already -— one who would probably break your wrists if you got anywhere near her. He’s Jason Statham, the British action star of “The Transporter” franchise. The two went public with their relationship in April 2010 at the Coachella music festival, and are now shopping for a house in LA. The pair have said little about their relationship. “I’ve got a girlie, and she’s precious to me,” Statham told Men’s Journal earlier this year. “If you say nothing, you can’t get f – - ked over. So I’m saying nothing.”

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was looking for work while she was in college, so she applied for and was hired as a booker at a modeling agency. When she showed up for her first day of work, the agency heads immediately fired her as a booker and hired her as a model. Then the other models from that agency exploded.
It just goes to show that you never know where your education, career, or life will take you.

A few years later Rosie became a Victoria’s Secret Angel, there by entering the fantasies of millions of normal and weird men. Now she’s the female lead in Transformers.

Preparation, struggle, rejection? Bah! All jokes aside, the girl is friendly, silly, and easy to talk to. The 24-year-old Brit grew up on a farm, which goes a long way toward making someone totally normal…or completely batballs crazy. You draw your own conclusions, but at the photo shoot for this piece, she talked about killing chickens (normal, to us) and how she didn’t feel like she looked her best that day (batballs crazy, clearly).

Did you watch Transformers cartoons to prepare for your role?
No. I’ve seen the Transformers movies before, but I haven’t seen the cartoons or played with the toys. I grew up on a farm in the southwest of England. I think I had about two toys my whole childhood. I was in the woods, riding my bike and my horse.

Do you think Transformers role-play when they have sex?
Do I think they role-play when they have sex? [Laughs.] What, like Bumblebee and Optimus Prime? No! ’Cause there’s no lady Transformers!
